The NEC Group

Project: Decant from NEC House into Centre Core NEC Village, Birmingham

As a part of the NEC’s £40 Million Venue Improvement Programme, a key element was to create a culture change amongst their employees. The NEC Group took the strategic decision to move their HQ offices ‘above the shop’, working even closer to their customers, in amongst the heart of the events and exhibition halls.

Following a competitive tender arena from professional relocation companies, BCL was selected as the perfect local partner to work alongside The NEC’s project team, which encompassed MACE FM, overseeing the fit-out of the impressive new office space and providing invaluable management direction and control to the relocation.

As often is the case the mobilisation period was fast track from BCL appointment just to the first of eleven carefully phased moves, planned to eliminate any disruption to the key operational areas of the business, including the main ticket office.

BCL was called upon to provide a range of services, which included the installation of cable management trunking to the new and existing desks to comply with the latest health and safety regulations.

The move also included the relocation of ‘The NEC Model’! This glass top 3m x 2m scaled model of the entire NEC village was safely relocated, with every model tree and vehicle replaced in its’ original spot (well nearly).

The move did not come without its’ challenges as you might expect when moving in excess of 500 personnel. As well as needing to implement the move during weekend periods around the hectic NEC event programme, vehicular access into the new office suite could only be gained through the restricted ‘underpass’. This required BCL to use low height vehicles to continuously ferry between the existing and new offices throughout every weekend phase. Careful programming of our resources ensured that this did not delay the planned schedule.

Huge congratulations go out to the project team, as despite the requirements for thousands of packing crates to facilitate the file movement, after every single phase the exact volume of crates were returned on time, thereby achieving a zero crate reconciliation!

The original NEC House is to become a new hotel, serving the exhibition centre and of course the near by Birmingham Airport.
